About 564,830 Americans are predicted to die of cancer this year. That is more than 1, 500 people a day in America alone.

Cancer is the second most common cause of death in the United States only after heart disease.

According to the American Hospital Association, cancer will surpass heart disease as the leading cause of death in the United States within five years.

Recent studies conducted by National Cancer Institute show that there is a link between: lymphoma among laboratory workers at the U.S. Department of Agriculture and lung cancer among worker who developed silicosis; elevated risks for multiple myeloma among men and women employed in the textile and plastic industries; non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and exposure to solvents, oils, and greases.

"We spend over $100 billion a year on cancer treatment in this country. If we are going to get on top of this problem, we absolutely have to focus more on prevention." Dr Devra Lee Davis, senior adviser to the assistant secretary for health and human services. Washington Post, February 14.
