Prostate Cancer Treatments

The three methods for prostate cancer treatment are discussed below. It should be noted that the treatment options for prostate cancer depend in part on whether the tumor has spread.

Surgery:

It is done in cases where the cancer is confined to the prostate and the patient is somewhat younger and in good health.Sexual potency is usually lost after it.

Radiation:

50 to 70 percent cases survive for 5 years after radiation and also retain their sexual potency. Survival with surgery or radiation is almost similar. Radiation is used when the cancer has spread out of the gland, but has not involved the bones.

Surgery and radiation both together are also used.

Hormone Therapy:

Giving oestrogen, the female sex hormone, or removal of the testes of the patient, slows the rate of growth of the cancer and as well reduces its size. This treatment provides relief from pain in the bones, and removes obstruction in passing urine, both of which symptoms are very troublesome for the patient. Hormone treatment, however, does not cure the cancer.

Chemotherapy:

This is not of much use.

Prognosis:

The chance of cure is best when the cancer is confined to the prostate and is removed surgically.

Early Detection:

Signs and Symptoms                              investigations

Non-cancer prostate enlargement causes.     Needle biopsy examination of the prostate provides an
early diagnosis.
Hesitancy to start passing urine.
Increased frequency of passing urine.
Prostate cancer in addition to above,
causes.
Pain on passing urine.
Blood in the urine.
